MA207 Final Exam - Takehome Portion

For each of the problems below, use the technology guide to perform a statistical analysis. You should justify your choice of method, including any assumptions made in the use of the method. You should indicate whether a two-tailed, left-tailed, or right-tailed analysis is appropriate, and, in hypothesis testing problems, state the null and alternative hypotheses. If the problem does not specify a level of significance, you should choose one.

Problem 1

A television network claims that a show in a certain time slot has a 17 percent share of the viewing audience and sets advertising rates accordingly. An advertiser running a commercial during the show wants to verify that the market share is 17 percent, so a telephone survey is taken during the show. The survey calls 500 randomly selected households and finds that 80 are tuned in to the show. Does this data support the network's audience share estimate, or should the advertiser negotiate a refund?

Problem 2

An experiment job training program for inmates scheduled for release is instituted as a correctional facility. Of the first 140 participants, 68 are reconvicted of an offence within one year of release. Nationally, 58 percent of people released from prison are reconvicted within one year. Does the program appear to be effective?

Problem 3

Two drug rehabilitation facilities are eligible to receive state funding. An administrator wants to compare the percentage of patients who remain drug free for six months after treatment. Records show that out of 128 clients who completed the program at facility 1, 47 remained drug free after 6 nonths. At facility 2, the figure was 35 of 82 clients. Can we conclude statistically that one clinic outperforms the other by this measure?
